This is one of the questions I get asked the most, and honestly… there’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to wedding photography coverage. I wish I could give you a perfect number and call it a day, but it really depends on your wedding, your priorities, and how you want your day to feel. Are you planning something super intimate? A full-day party? Do you care about every little moment being documented or just the highlights? All of that plays into how many hours you actually need. So instead of guessing, let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense!

Let’s get into the real breakdown of wedding photography coverage, because this is where things start to click. If you’re looking at 4–6 hours, this is usually perfect for smaller weddings, elopements, or days where you’re keeping things simple, ceremony, a few portraits, and a short reception. It’s chill, intentional, and doesn’t drag on. 6–8 hours is where we start covering more of the story. You’ll typically get getting ready moments, your ceremony, portraits, and a good chunk of the reception. This is a solid middle ground if you want a well-rounded gallery without committing to a full-day timeline.
Now 8–10 hours… this is the sweet spot. This is what most of my clients go with, and for good reason. You’re able to capture the full story of the day, from the quiet getting ready moments all the way into the energy of the dance floor without feeling rushed. And then there’s 10–12 hours, which is great for larger weddings, multiple locations, or cultural celebrations with longer traditions. If your day naturally takes up that much time, it’ll feel amazing. If not… it can start to feel a little long!

I’m gonna be real with you 8–10 hours of wedding photography coverage is usually that perfect balance. It gives you space to actually experience your day instead of rushing through it. You’re not constantly watching the clock or trying to squeeze everything into a tight timeline. Shorter timelines can sometimes feel chaotic. Everything moves fast, and before you know it, it’s over. You don’t really get a second to process what’s happening, let alone soak it in. And trust me, your wedding day deserves more than that.
On the flip side, going too long (like 12+ hours when you don’t need it) can have the opposite effect. The day can start to feel stretched out, and you might find yourself just waiting around for the next thing to happen. That energy shift is real, and it shows in your photos. That’s why 8–10 hours tends to hit that perfect middle, enough time to tell your full story without dragging things out!

At the end of the day, choosing your wedding photography coverage comes down to what you actually want your day to look and feel like. Think about your timeline, your priorities, and what moments matter most to you. Do you want getting ready photos? A full dance floor? A private last dance? Multiple locations?
Also think about your energy. Do you want a relaxed, flowing day where you can breathe and be present? Or are you okay with things moving a little quicker? There’s no wrong answer here, it’s just about what fits you. If your day is packed with events and traditions, longer coverage will feel natural. If you’re keeping things simple and intimate, shorter coverage might be exactly what you need. It’s less about the “right” number and more about what supports your experience.
